Michelle Barger
Michelle Barger is the Head of Conservation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where she oversees conservators with expertise in paintings, paper, objects, photography and electronic media. Developing models of care for contemporary art is of particular interest to her – especially when integrating the role of living artists. Unorthodox approaches to art making and how this shapes conservation practice are subjects of specialized focus, and have led to publications on Eva Hesse and Bruce Conner. Barger has worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She holds a BA in Art History from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and an MS in Art Conservation from the University of Delaware/Winterthur Museum.
