Kate Moomaw-Taylor
Kate Moomaw-Taylor is the Chief Conservator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she oversees the Susan and David Goode Center for Advanced Study in Art Conservation. The center’s staff includes conservators, conservation technicians, and mount makers, specializing in the care of paintings, objects, paper, photographs, contemporary art, and time-based media. From 2011-2025, she was Senior Conservator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Denver Art Museum, focusing on objects, outdoor sculpture, and time-based media. In her work, she seeks to take a holistic and practical approach that centers people and relationships to provide the best possible care for collections. She served on the founding board of the Contemporary Art Network (CAN!) of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) with the aim of promoting community and exchange amongst conservators of contemporary art in the US. Prior to this, she was the Program Chair for the Electronic Media Group (EMG) of AIC. She appeared as a guest speaker at VoCA’s Artist Interview and Time-Based Media Stewardship Workshops hosted at the Denver Art Museum. Her publications have included case studies on plastic artworks, research on the care of participatory artworks, and accounts of time-based media conservation at the Denver Art Museum. She is a graduate of the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and completed training positions at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
